Ernst Winckelmann, a salesman for anti-dandruff shampoo, is still thinking about his ex-wife Hilde after seven years. He can’t establish a viable relationship with his young girlfriend Aline, who dreams of heading off to travel. He’s supposed to take care of his ex-wife’s child.
Strangely, when five-year-old Rosa comes along, Winckelmann’s trips gain what they had been missing. The film looks at how difficult it is to find the present in places where time seems to have stood still.
The landscape inspired the choice to shoot in black and white. The film is set in Hamburg and northern Germany. It’s a harsh landscape and we tried to make the images as concentrated as possible. We were aiming at cinema boiled down to the minimum, to the essential. I would like to leave out everything superficial. Everything should be there in its own right and be as self-evident as possible.
