Just like Gerhard Roth’s book with the same title, the film A Voyage into the Innermost of Vienna is a collection of 7 places and 7 destinies. It encounters various people, random fates, explores locations, descends into the depths of the city with a team of sewage workers and ascends to the tip of the cathedral tower with the head of the cathedral’s building works department. The film seeks to discover just how the city thinks, dreams, digests.

The film was produced to mark the millennium and was a relatively lavish production for a documentation. It is an essayistic, associative journey, accompanied and indeed experienced by a narrator right from the outset.
